Answers to common problems
This page describes some common situations that arise when using the Lomak family of light operated keyboards.
Nothing happens when I click or typeThere could be several causes:
- The headpointer/handpointer battery may be flat. Check if it is still producing a red dot. Recharge the batteries if not. You can continue to use the pointers while they are being charged.
- Is the Lomak in Mouse mode? If the Mouse button is illuminated, briefly pause on it until it goes out. You will then be in Keyboard mode and be able to send characters to the computer.
- Has the Lomak become disconnected? Check that the USB cable is still plugged in to the computer. You may connect and disconnect it at any time; however, the computer’s status of the Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys may get out of sync with the Lomak.
- The computer does not recognise the Lomak. For Windows, the PC should play some audible notes when the Lomak is plugged in, provided the PC sound has not been muted. Try rebooting your computer.
- The room lighting may be affecting the keyboards sensitivity. Try moving the Lomak to a less affected area.
Adjust the mouse cursor speed by selecting a lower numbered mouse speed key on the Control bar. You can change the speed setting while the mouse pointer is moving or stationary.
Refer to the Mouse speed section in Using the mouse.
When you start the mouse cursor moving in a particular direction, the mouse direction will change if you touch any of the other mouse direction keys during movement. It is likely that you lifted your head to observe the mouse cursor position on screen, and in doing so, you unwittingly activated another mouse direction key when the laser pointer brushed across the key.
We suggest that you increase the setting of the mouse direction key delay (refer to the User preferences page).
The laser pointer has a sensor that only lets the laser turn on when it sees an infrared signal coming from the keyboard. It also has a timer which is reset with movement, and if there is no infrared signal and no movement within about 30 seconds it will put the pointer in sleep mode to save battery power. Any movement will wake it up, turn on the laser for 2 seconds (if the battery is charged) and then let the infrared sensor control the laser. Recharge the headpointer if the laser does not come on.
The handpointer also has a timer which is reset with movement. If no movement is detected for about 10 seconds the timer will put the pointer in sleep mode to save battery power. Any movement will wake it up again. Recharge the handpointer if the LED does not come on.
If either of the right hand Shift buttons is on for more than 8 seconds, Windows will issue a message about FilterKeys if the shortcut for this option is turned on (inside Windows). Use Esc to cancel the message.
We suggest that you change the FilterKeys settings in Windows. Open the Accessibility Options control panel and uncheck the Use FilterKeys option.
There could be several causes:
- The Lomak has multiple layouts to meet the "plug & play" requirements of international keyboards. If you are generating incorrect characters, it is likely that the layout of your Lomak does not match the language setting of your PC, as set in the Regional and Language Options (Windows XP) control panel of your computer's operating system.
- Or perhaps your Lomak has previously been set to a Notesai layout and used with a removeable Notesai overlay on top of the central circle. This is a legitimate mode of operation, but the Notesai overlay may have been removed before the layout has been changed back to a Lomak selection. If this is the case, your Lomak will respond only to every second key in the central circle, and some keys will give the wrong characters.
- Or perhaps your Notesai has been inadvertently set to a Lomak layout.
To change your keyboard's layout, read the User preferences page.
The word prediction keys on your Lomak might be set to give wrong responses. For instance, it might be set to give number keys or page navigation keys instead of function keys. Check your Lomak's setting for the word prediction key choice (refer to the User preferences page).
Otherwise, it is likely that you brushed the laser pointer across a key when you lifted your head up to read the computer screen..
We suggest that you increase the setting of the word prediction key delay (refer to the User preferences page).
You may not have administrative rights. Ask your system administrator to do this task.
Perhaps your PC has not been set to use the international keyboard that your Lomak's layout is set for. Each version of PC operating system seems to have a different method of selecting its choice of keyboards (refer to the Selecting a keyboard in your computer section in the main Contents page.
If some keys are unresponsive on the first click and generate a double character on the second click, you are most likely using one of the “dead keys”. This is a designed behaviour with many international keyboards. For a more detailed explanation, refer to the section Creating accented characters with dead keys n the Creating international characters page.
