Quick Start Guide for Lomak
Welcome to Lomak—your light operated mouse and keyboard.
Your Lomak operates with any computer that has an external USB port, and does not require any additional software. To the computer, your Lomak is an additional standard mouse and keyboard.
Please read this guide before you use the Lomak. Click on each heading to open and close its instructions.
1. Start charging the laser pointer- If you are supplied with an international charger, clip the power plug adaptor to the charger body.
- Plug the charger into a mains power outlet.
- Plug the charger lead into the socket underneath the pointer. The charging indicator will glow red.
- The pointer should turn on for two seconds when it is first moved after being motionless for a minute. If it doesn’t turn on, unplug the charger lead and plug it in again.
- It takes about two hours to fully charge a flat battery, but you need not wait that long if you want to start using the keyboard before the pointer is fully charged.
- The charging indicator will glow orange (red and green together) when the battery is fully charged. Switch off the charger and unplug the lead from the pointer.
- Hold the base of the keyboard stand and push each of the foot rods until their centre grooves click into place and they line up with the base frame.
- To level the keyboard stand, pull the adjustable spring-loaded end-caps outwards and rotate each end until the foot rods are more or less at right angles to the frame. Adjust each foot rod until the correct angle for your Notesai is achieved, then release the end-caps to lock them in place.
- If any screws are loose, tighten them with the hex key provided.
- If the keyboard is not fitted to the stand, install it by gripping the keyboard from each side with your fingers curled behind it. Pull the holding grips out sideways with your fingers. Line up the locating slots on the back of the keyboard with the stand’s angle rods, and slide the rods into place. Now let go of the grips.
- If you are using a laptop, open it fully and slide it in behind the keyboard.
- If you are using a desktop computer, place the Lomak (in its keyboard stand) in a convenient position below the computer monitor.
Clip the pointer into the headband and put the headband comfortably on your head so that its silver laser port is facing the keyboard. You can wear the pointer on either side but wearing it on the right might be easier.
- Alternatively clip the pointer into the handholder, if you have ordered this accessory for controlling the keyboard by hand movements.
- The laser will turn on when moved but needs to be pointed at the keyboard in order to keep going.
- Do not cover any part of the keyboard as this may block the infrared signal (invisible) emitted by the keyboard which the pointer needs to "see" in order to remain switched on.
- Plug the Lomak into any free USB port.
- The first time you do this, your computer may display some messages as it registers the new hardware. It may also play some sounds to indicate that a device has been connected.
- The Lomak will start up and its middle green circle will illuminate to indicate that it is in keyboard mode and ready to be used. This is one of Lomak’s three Confirm circles which control when characters are sent to the computer.
- The laser on the headpointer will now switch on, as long as you are facing the Lomak keyboard. If you aim the laser at a key it will illuminate. If it is the wrong one, don’t worry—just aim the laser at the key you want and it will illuminate instead. Then if you sweep the laser through a Confirm circle, it will send this key to the computer. Sometimes we say “touch” or “click” a key, and then “confirm” it—it means the same simple procedure.
- Plug the Lomak into a USB port on the computer itself. Do not connect to a keyboard hub or other low-power port as Mac-OS will reject such an attempt.
- The Lomak will start up and its middle green circle will illuminate to indicate that it is in keyboard mode and ready to be used. If the Lomak does not start up, you will need to connect it to the Mac using a short USB extension cable.
- The laser on the headpointer will now switch on, as long as you are facing the Lomak keyboard. If you aim the laser at a key it will illuminate. Sometimes we say “touch” or “click” a key—it means the same. Then when you click one of the large green circles the character will be “confirmed” and sent to the computer.
- On the first connection, the Mac will open a window and report that it cannot identify the keyboard. Use the Mac's mouse to click the Continue button.
- The Mac will now ask some questions. Give the responses as if the Lomak was a standard keyboard, as follows.
- In response to the request to “Press the key immediately to the right of the Shift key on the left side of the external keyboard”, use the Lomak pointer to click the sequence z, Confirm. This will send a z to the Mac.
- In response to the request to “Press the key immediately to the left of the Shift key on the right side of the external keyboard”, click “/” (the forward slash on the left circle) and Confirm. Be sure to click the forward slash “/” key.
- An option window will appear. Use the Mac mouse to select “ANSI (United States and others)” and click the Done button.
- The Lomak needs to be set to its Apple Mac layout in order for you to access the keys for sound control and CD drive eject. Refer to Setting the keyboard layout in the User preferences page for instructions.
To enter mouse mode, pause on the Mouse key on the control bar (the bottom row) until it turns on. The key will remain illuminated while the Lomak is in mouse mode and the mouse cursor speed will be shown on the mouse speed keys alongside. The mouse direction arrows and click keys in the blue region around the central green Confirm will now be selectable with the laser.
- Pause the laser on a mouse direction arrow to start the cursor moving in the selected direction. Click the central Confirm to stop the movement. You can also move the cursor diagonally by touching an adjacent direction key after mouse movement has started.
- To make the mouse cursor move faster or slower, click a higher or lower speed setting. This change can occur before or after cursor movement has started.

- To do a drag and drop operation, move the mouse cursor using the mouse direction keys until the cursor is over the object that you want to click and drag. Click the Drag button and Confirm. The click action is now held in the “on” state. Drag or move the object by activating the mouse direction keys until it is in the target position, and then click Drag again, and Confirm. The hold action is now released.
- To return to keyboard mode, pause on the Mouse key until it turns off. The keys in the central blue region will now be inactive.
You can put your Lomak into Rest mode at any time in either keyboard or mouse mode.
- Click on the green Rest key at the right of the control bar. This will make the Lomak ignore the laser for the time being while you are thinking about your next action.
- To return to keyboard or mouse mode, click the Rest key a second time.
- Your Lomak keyboard has many more features than we can describe here.
- To view the User Guides, insert the Opdo CD into your computer. The CDROM is designed to automatically launch a browser and display the Welcome page (index.html) if your computer permits this action.
- Click on User Guides and navigate to the sections you want to read.
- Or click Lomak Typing Tutorial to load a document for your instruction and skill improvement.
- If your browser does not automatically launch, use the PC’s Windows Explorer (or Finder on the Mac) to display the CDROM contents and double-click on the index.html file.
- You may also read the latest version of the User Guides on-line at www.opdo.com/support.html.
Good luck with your Lomak—it will soon be your familiar friend!
