This is the User Guide for the Lomak family of light operated mouse and keyboard devices.
What Lomak doesLomak is a computer keyboard and mouse combined together in a single unit.
When used as a keyboard, it sends key codes to the computer just like an ordinary keyboard does.
When used as a mouse, it sends mouse movement and click codes to the computer just like an ordinary mouse does.
Any person who has trouble using a standard mouse and keyboard can benefit from using Lomak. That includes people with physical impairments like cerebral palsy, tetraplegia and even arthritis. People recovering from injury also appreciate how simple Lomak is to learn and use, so they can continue their work and other pursuits. Lomak’s design is suitable for people recovering from carpal tunnel syndrome and occupational overuse syndrome.
Lomak plugs right into any modern laptop or desktop computer, so you can take it with you wherever you go.
Although people tell us that their Lomak system often seems like the best thing since sliced bread, it can’t do everything.
- Lomak can’t be used with computers that do not have an external USB port.
- Lomak can’t be used with computers manufactured before 1998.
- Lomak can’t be a mouse and a keyboard at exactly the same time, so you have to switch between Mouse mode and Keyboard mode.
- Lomak can’t make coffee.
The Lomak and its sister keyboard, the Notesai, operate with any computer that has an external USB port, and do not require any additional software. To the computer, the Lomak or Notesai is an additional standard mouse and keyboard.
As each keyboard operates in the same basic way, they are referred to as "Lomak" keyboards throughout this guide. If sections apply to a specific member of the Lomak family, this will be made clear in the context.
Your Lomak lets you do anything that can be done with a normal mouse and keyboard. Lomak is easy to use but like any new device, it has its own rules and special ways of operating. Once you understand how it works you will find it fast, simple to understand, and easy to use.
The Lomak keyboard is operated by light signals coming from a pointer which you move with your head or with your hand. There are two types of pointer.
The laser pointer is mounted in a headband or gripped in a handholder. It produces a small red dot while it is aimed at the keyboard. The laser first turns on when it is moved, and continues to operate while the pointer receives an infrared signal that is emitted from the keyboard (the infrared sgnal is invisible). The laser switches off when you point it away from the keyboard, and switches on again when it comes back into range.
The handpointer uses an LED (light-emitting diode) that appears as a small red dot when the handpointer is moved along the keyboard surface. It switches off if not used for a few seconds, and turns on again when next moved.
Although they appear to be continuously lit, both the laser and the LED generate a light signal which is pulsed on and off very fast, for detection by the keyboard.
Both pointers operate from internal batteries, which may need to be recharged when you first take delivery.
Recharge a pointer the first time you use the keyboard, when you have used it for more than eight hours, or when you are not going to use it for a while.
A battery will last about eight hours with continuous use. Since the battery is lithium-ion, you need not completely discharge it before recharging.
To charge a battery, plug the lead from the charger into the socket in the pointer. Plug the charger into a mains power outlet. A small LED alongside the port will glow red, indicating that the battery is being charged. Do not place anything such as table-cloths, carpets, bedding or cushions on top of the battery charger while it is charging.
It takes about two hours to fully charge a flat battery. Please charge it at a room temperature between 5 and 40°C. Charge times will vary according to temperature and the charge state of the battery. The charging LED will change to orange (red and green together) when the battery is fully charged.
If the battery only works for a short time even when fully charged, the battery should be replaced by a technician or serviced by your supplier.
If a pointer does not wake up with movement, recharge it. Note that the laser pointer comes on for two seconds when first woken up, but then turns off if it is not pointed at the keyboard.
You may connect the Lomak into any USB port on your computer. After a few moments it will be recognised as an additional mouse and keyboard. The central Confirm cluster of the Lomak will glow green, indicating that the keyboard is ready for use.
If you are using the Lomak for the first time with an Apple Mac computer, you will be asked some questions. For the answers to these questions, refer to Section 4b of either of these guides:
You may disconnect the Lomak at any time, but the best method is to send the keyboard to sleep via the bottom right hand Rest button and then disconnect.
Please retain your original Lomak packaging, as this will be useful for storage of the Lomak if you will not be using it for an extended period.
You do not need to remove the Lomak from the keyboard stand, but we suggest that you make the stand more compact. Pull the base end-caps outwards and rotate them so that the legs are aligned with the frame, then push the legs back under the keyboard.
If you need to remove the keyboard from its stand, grip the keyboard from each side with your fingers curled behind it. Pull the holding grips out sideways with your fingers until the keyboard releases.
We also suggest that you fully charge your pointer battery before storage, as in our experience, it is better to leave pointer batteries charged than discharged.
If the Lomak does not respond try restarting your computer with your Lomak already connected.
If it still does not respond it could be receiving interference from certain high-frequency lighting, e.g. you may be too close to an energy-saver light bulb or energy efficient fluorescent tube that is operating within the Lomak's frequency limits. If this is the case, try operating the keyboard with the light switched off, or try shielding the keyboard from it.
Please contact us if you have any operational problems with your new Lomak. Visit www.opdo.com to obtain our telephone number and email address.
Your Lomak system contains several features to make sure you are always safe and comfortable.
- The Lomak keyboard has no gaps or moving parts so spillages should cause no problems.
- There are no sharp edges to catch on clothing or skin.
- The pointers operate from rechargeable batteries.
- The keyboard operates using low voltage power from the computer.
- The eyesafe laser used in the headpointer only stays on when it is pointing at the keyboard.
Your Lomak system has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
- Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
- Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.
- Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.
- Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.
NOTE: The manufacturer is not responsible for any radio or TV interference caused by unauthorised modifications to this equipment. Such modifications could void the user’s authority to operate the equipment and will void the Lomak Warranty.
Never use thinners, benzene, synthetic cleansers, abrasive cleaning materials, or solvents to clean the Lomak keyboard or pointers.
Do not wash any of the parts or immerse them in water.
Gently wipe off any dirt with a soft damp cloth impregnated with a mild soap or detergent. Care should be taken when wiping around any cable or battery connecting ports so as not to wet them. Dry any damp areas with a soft cloth before reconnecting any of the units..
