Using the keyboard
This page applies when the keyboard is first turned on.
Adjusting the pointer
Headpointer
To work properly, the Lomak head pointer must point at the centre of the Lomak keyboard when your head is in its relaxed position. That’s different for each person, so when you first use Lomak there is a small exercise you can do to adjust the angle of the head pointer. You may need to do this with someone else helping you.
1. Sit facing the Lomak keyboard, about 600mm (2 ft) away.
2. Make sure the headpointer is sitting comfortably on your head.
3. Close your eyes and let your head settle into the most comfortable position.
4. Wait a few seconds and then open your eyes.
5. Notice where the laser dot is on the keyboard.
If the dot is in the centre of the Lomak keyboard, then stop. Otherwise, adjust the headpointer mounting bracket and repeat Steps 3 to 5.
Handpointer
The hand pointer has been designed so the angle of the wand can be altered for either left or right hand use, or just a comfortable position. To adjust the angle, gently move the wand to suit.
The general operating principle of the Lomak
keyboard is ‘Select and Confirm’. A user selects a character
or button by touching it with the headpointer laser dot or the
handpointer wand, and then confirms that selection by activating
one of the central Confirm clusters. This process allows the
user to correct any incorrect selections before a character or
command action is sent to the computer.
This key is essential for completing all commands. There is a Confirm cluster situated in the centre of each circle.
As you become proficient in using the Lomak, you will confirm selections with a continuous sweep through the central green buttons without a conscious pause on the cluster.
You can put your Lomak into Rest mode at any time in Keyboard and
Mouse mode by clicking the green Rest button at the bottom right
of the keyboard. This means you do not have to worry about the
pointer activating keys when you are thinking about your next
action. In this mode the only active key is the Rest button itself,
which on a second click will return you to where you left off.
We
suggest that you put the Lomak into Rest mode before adjusting
the headpointer. After adjusting the pointer to suit your
needs, click the Rest button again and return the Lomak to the
active
mode.
For convenience, a Space button is placed
at mid-height between each pair of circles. This lets you create
a Space character very easily as you can confirm it by making a
continuous move from one Confirm cluster to another in a single
movement.
If you pause on a Space, it will repeat until you move off it.
Notesai A-Shift key
In the Notesai layouts, the Right-hand Space button has two functions.
If the right-hand Space is confirmed on the right, then it functions as a normal Space key.
If the right-hand Space is confirmed in the centre, then it acts as the A-Shift (alpha-shift) key, which selects the next character from the secondary (lower use) keys in place of the primary (high use) keys on the Notesai's Alphabet circle.

The following buttons will repeat if you pause on them for a brief period:
- the Space keys between the circles
- the Enter, Backspace, and Delete keys
- the Arrow keys on the Right circle.
Backspace will remove the character to the left of the insertion point cursor, and Delete will remove the character to the right of the insertion point cursor.
To stop the repeat action, move off the button.
Note that the repeat delay and repeat rate are set in your computer's keyboard control panel. For Windows, open the Control Panel/Keyboard pane and adjust the settings to suit your own preference.

Scroll Lock (on Left circle) |
The Caps Lock button, when confirmed, changes the Caps Lock status of the computer. Its remains illuminated while the computer is locked in upper-case mode. Successive clicks of Caps Lock and Confirm will toggle the status.
In Windows, the Caps Lock function will toggle on/off if you change the Caps Lock status using any other keyboard connected to the computer.
The Scroll Lock button also toggles its status between activations, but its behavior depends on the application program that you are using at the time. It is rarely used.
The Shift buttons are found within the top
half of each circle. In Keyboard mode, you click Shift prior
to the character whose case is to be changed. The Shift action
is reset automatically after the selected character has been
confirmed.
Use Caps Lock if you want all characters to be in upper case.
Note that the two Shift buttons on the left act as Left Shift to your application program, and the two on the right act as Right Shift. In many programs there is no distinction between Left Shift and Right Shift, allowing you to use the one closest to the character to follow.
Any of the Shift buttons can be switched on and off by re-touching them with the pointer.
The Ctrl and Alt buttons on the Control bar act similarly to the Shift buttons in that they modify the character that is selected and confirmed.
The Right Alt is designated as Alt Gr and has a special usage in international layouts.
To do Ctrl-Alt-Del on a Lomak keyboard, click a Ctrl button followed by Alt, then up to Delete in the Alphabet circle. Then confirm.
To do Ctrl-Alt-Del on a Notesai keyboard, click Ctrl-Alt-A/Shift-Confirm-Delete-Confirm.
To create a Function key command, select
the F/Shift button (extreme right) and Confirm. The F/Shift
button will stay illuminated, indicating that the next selection
from the right-hand circle will be from the inner Function key
circle.
If you need to create a Shift+, Ctrl+, or Alt+Function key combination, select the Shift, Ctrl, and/or Alt first, then do the F/Shift-Confirm, then finally the F key and Confirm. For instance, to execute the Open File shortcut command in Microsoft Word (Ctrl+Alt+F2) do this sequence: Ctrl, Alt, F/Shift, Confirm, F2, Confirm.
To move the insertion point cursor with the arrow keys or move to the next cell in a spreadsheet, click any of the direction arrows in the Right circle and confirm.
To repeat an arrow key, pause on the desired button. After a delay the direction arrow will start repeating. To stop the repeat, move off the button.
To select or highlight text when using word processing programs, position the insertion point cursor next to the word or words you wish to highlight. Click a Shift button and then pause on an arrow button. The highlighting will progress across the page. To stop the highlighting, move off the arrow button.
